Lincoln Square, Chicago - Definition and Overview |
Lincoln Square is a neighborhood on the North Side of Chicago. About 40,000 people live in this neighborhood, which is accessible through the Brown Line of the el. It is bounded by Foster Avenue on the north, Montrose Avenue on the south, Damen Avenue on the east and the Chicago River on the west. It is somewhat trendy and its housing stock consists of private residences and small apartment buildings.
The commercial heart of Lincoln Square is located at the intersection of Lawrence, Western and Lincoln Avenues. Lincoln Avenue south east of this intersection is home to a wide variety of restaurants and shops. Lincoln Square is historically known as a heavily German influenced and populated neighborhood, but now one is just as likely to see shops catering to Thai or Middle Eastern cultures. Still, several German bars and restaurants, including the excellent Brauhaus restaurant reside in Lincoln Square.
One other attraction of sorts in Lincoln Square is Joseph Zeman, also known as the Pigeon Man (http://www.fourwinds10.com/news/14-spiritual/D-inspirational/2004/14D-10-03-04-the-pigeon-man-of-lincoln-square.html). Joseph can be found every day from dawn to dusk on Western Ave near Lawrence. You can site Joseph by the hundreds of pigeons that flock to spend time with him. The pigeons quite literally perch on Joseph as he feeds them and talks to them. Joseph gladly accepts donations to help feed himself and the pigeons.
