 Lindsey - Definition

Lindsey is a traditional subdivison of Lincolnshire in England, which includes most the urbanised areas. It was named for the Kingdom of Lindsey. The division was recognised by Parliament in 1888 when it was given its own county council (along with the other subdivisions Kesteven and Holland). These separate county councils were abolished in 1974 and Lincolnshire had a single county council for the first time (but the name lives on in the titles of the administrative districts of East Lindsey and West Lindsey). However much of the populated area of Lindsey was hived off to form the southern part of county of Humberside. In 1996 these areas became independent authorities as North Lincolnshire (centred on Scunthorpe) and North East Lincolnshire comprising the Grimsby-Cleethorpes conurbation. Lindsey itself has also been traditionally subdivided into west, north and south ridings, akin to Yorkshire to the north.
