- Adan Abdulle Osman, first Somali president, 1960-7.
- Abdirisaq Haji Hussein, Premier, 1964-7; arrested in 1969.
- Abdullahi Isse, SYL leader before independence.
- Sheikh Mukhtar Mohamed Hussein, Speaker of the Parliament, 1965-9; interim President of Somalia after the assassination of President Abdirashid Ali Shermarke. Placed under house arrest after the coup.
- Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke, President of Somalia 1967-1969, was assassinated in Las Anod; after seven days of political turmoil, General Mohamed Said Barre took over in a bloodless coup.
