Fiji received its independence in 1970. The post of Chief Minister, which had existed since 1966, was renamed Prime Minister.

- Timoci Bavadra: April 13, 1987 - May 14, 1987
- Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara: December 5, 1987 - June 2, 1992
- Sitiveni Rabuka: June 2, 1992 - May 19, 1999
- Mahendra Chaudhry: May 19, 1999 - May 27, 2000
- Ratu Tevita Momoedonu: May 27, 2001
- Laisenia Qarase: July 4, 2000 - March 14, 2001 (interim)
- Ratu Tevita Momoedonu: March 14, 2001 - March 16, 2001 (interim)
- Laisenia Qarase : March 16, 2001 - present
Ratu Momoedonu was appointed Prime Minister on May 27, 2000, by the then-President, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, in order to meet a constitutional technicality. He resigned only a few minutes later, as soon as the technicality had been attended to, in order to allow the President to assume full executive power.
