During the 1980s and 1990s there was an explosion of companies selling 2-D and 3-D graphic chips. Most of those companies have dissappeared as the market could only support two strong vendors, currently ATI Technologies and Nvidia

• ArtX - acquired by ATI Technologies
• Chromatic Research acquired by ATI Technologies
• Oak Technology - acquired by Zoran
• OPTi - no longer makes graphics chips
• Raycer - acquired by Apple Computer
• Real3D - acquired by Intel
• Rendition - acquired by Micron Technology
• S3 - merged with Diamond Multimedia, eventually bankrupt, assets acquired by VIA Technologies
• Tseng Labs - sold their video chip assets to ATI Technologies in 1997

So far, ATI Technologies is the only graphics card vendor that has lasted for any amount of time.
