List of incomplete Doctor Who serials - Definition and Overview

This is a list of Doctor Who serials that no longer exist in the form that they were transmitted. These serials are incomplete due to the BBC's former policy of only holding a limited archive of episodes, and blanking tapes belonging to shows that they didn't see a potential future market in. Many other shows, such as Dad's Army have been similarly affected.

The degree of incompleteness varies - some Hartnell and Troughton stories have one or more episodes missing, while others are missing altogether. While all stories starring Jon Pertwee are complete in the sense that all the episodes are present, some of the episodes only survive in black and white.

All the incomplete serials have a complete soundtrack held by the BBC, and some have been released on tape and/or CD with specially recorded narration. The surviving episodes have been released in one of three ways:

• The Hartnell Years and The Troughton Years VHS tapes, released in the early 1990s
• Abridged releases, with the surviving episodes and one or more of the following:
  • Linking material recorded by actors (The Reign of Terror, The Crusade and The Invasion)
  • An audio CD with recordings of the missing episodes (The Crusade and The Ice Warriors)
  • A reconstruction with photographs, surviving clips and soundtrack (The Tenth Planet)
• The Lost In Time DVDs in 2004.
