Counties
20 (earlier 21) counties of the Kingdom of Hungary were situated in present-day Slovakia (completely or partly). After the creation of Czechoslovakia, they continued to exist till 1922. Most of them are still used informally for the corresponding territory:

- Ostrihom county (southern part in present-day Hungary)
- Hont (southern part in present-day Hungary)
- Novohrad (southern part in present-day Hungary)
- Abov-Turňa (southern part in present-day Hungary)
- Zemplín (sountern part in Hungary, eastern in Ukraine)
- Uh county (eastern part in the Ukraine).
Other traditional regions
There are also other regions in Slovakia, which do not correspond to historical counties:
- Kysuce - northern part of the former Trenčín county
- Záhorie - western part of the former Nitra and Bratislava county
- Podpoľanie - southern part of the former Zvolen county
- Zamagurie - northern part of the former Spi county
