Livingston is a 1960s new town in West Lothian, Scotland, and, although closer to Edinburgh, was originally intended to ease over-crowding in Glasgow. It has been described as a large shopping centre deposited on top of a village.
Livingston was the fourth of Scotland's five new towns built after the Second World War and building began in 1965. The local economy was, for some time, based around technology, with several multi-national companies including Motorola having factories located there. The largest employers are now the retail sector and the NHS.
Livingston features one of the largest shopping areas in Scotland, with the original Almondvale Shopping Centre being expanded in 1995 as well as a McArthurGlen Retail Outlet being added in 1999.
