A longitudinal wave is a wave that has vibrations along the wave's direction of travel. Examples of longitudinal waves include sound waves, ripples in water, and certain types of seismic waves, the P-waves, created by earthquakes and explosions. They are also referred to as compressional waves or pressure waves. See also: Transverse wave
