Lotfi Asker Zadeh (born February 4, 1921 in Baku, Azerbaijan as Lotfi Aliaskerzadeh) created fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic in 1965. His own nationality is somewhat fuzzy: born to an Azerbaijani father and Russian mother, he grew up in Iran and moved to the United States in 1944. He has taught at Berkeley since 1959. Other works includes the introduction of Soft Computing in 1991.
