Lou Barlow - Definition and Overview

Lou Barlow is a musician from the USA credited with helping pioneer the lo-fi style of rock music in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He was born on July 17, 1966 in Dayton, Ohio, but was raised primarily in Amherst, Massachusetts. He began his career playing in the Massachusetts hardcore punk band Deep Wound with J Mascis. After becoming disillusioned with the constraints of hardcore, the two formed Dinosaur Jr in the mid-1980s. Tension between Mascis and Barlow led to the latter's removal from the band after the release of Bug in 1989, however. Barlow then concentrated on his side-project Sebadoh and later formed the Folk Implosion with John Davis. Through his work with these bands, he reached iconic status in the indie-rock community, and even enjoyed a top-40 hit, "Natural One," with the Folk Implosion. He also recorded an album with Belgian musician Rudy Trouvé. Considered by many to be one of the most prolific songwriters in indie music, he has released a number of solo albums under the names Lou Barlow, Lou Barlow & Friends or Sentridoh. Barlow is now making his first entirely studio-recorded solo album, which is scheduled for release in 2004.
