Louis Joylon West - Definition and Overview

Louis Jolyon ("Jolly") West was chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Oklahoma. He was also a CIA contract employee who experimented with LSD during the period when it was hoped it could be a mind control, or other, weapon.

He believed LSD caused a psychosis-like state and once hoped to make an elephant go mad by injecting a massive dose. The creature went into a stupor, and was unfortunately killed during revival efforts. (Lee and Shlain, page 22)

Dr. West also wrote about and was a consultant on the topic of destructive cults.
