Lucius Julius Caesar - Definition and Overview


The 'Julii' Clan is one of the most significant and influential families in Roman History. The patrician family were always an aristocratic, impeccable bunch, but the Romans elite considered them not as wealthy as themselves. The Caesars were active in public life since the Punic Wars. It was only from the generation of Julius Caesar's father, that they gain some influence.

The family originated from Alba Longa. This city was destroyed by the Roman King Tullus Hostilius. They moved after to Rome. Various members recognise their descent from the Goddess Venus and the first Roman King Romulus.

Lucius Julius Libo was consul in 267bc. His son of the same name had Numerius Julius Caesar, born before 300bc. Numerius was a grandfather to Sextus Julius Caesar I.

Caesar is latin for hairy. This surname was originally a nickname given to the family. Overtime the nickname became a surname. The surname came out due, to the male members had hairy foreheads.

Sextus Julius Caesar I - Son of Lucius Julius Caesar I and grandson to the above (Numerius Julius Caesar). Sextus was a militry tribune under Lucius Aemilius Pallus and a Proconsul of Liguria and lived in 200bc. His sons were Gaius and Sextus Julius.

Gaius Julius Caesar I - Father of Gaius Julius Caesar I.

Gaius Julius Caesar II - Son of the above. Married Marcia, daughter of Quintus Marcius Rex, from the Regii. Father of Gaius Julius Caesar III (father of Julius Caesar the dictator), Sextus Julius Caesar (a politician and supporter of Gaius Marius) and Julia Caesaris (wife of Gaius Marius).

Sextus Julius Caesar II - Son of Sextus Julius Caesar I. As a Roman Ambassador, assisted in restoring liberty of Abdera in 169bc. Consul 156bc.

Lucius Julius Caesar II - Son of the above. Had 2 sons with Poppilia of Rome. Gaius Julius Caesar Strabo Vopiscus was an orator and his brother Lucius Julius Caesar III were killed together in 87bc at the beginning of the Civil War by Partisans of Marius.

Lucius Julius Caesar III - Son of the above. Consul of 90bc. He was author of the Julian Law and was a Censor. Lucius proposed Roman Citizenship Laws to allies who didn't participate in the Social War against Rome in 90bc. His children were Lucius Julius Caesar IV and Julia Antonia.

Lucius Julius Caesar IV - Son of the above and died after 43bc. Consul of 63bc, was a legate in Gaul in 52bc and a high priest. After the conquest of Gaul he went to Pompey. He accompanied Julius Caesar into Civil War. After Caesar's assassination, he allied with his nephew Mark Antony. Him and his nephew fell out in 43bc, but the pleas of his sister saved his himself and nephew from proscription.
