Ludger Duvernay - Definition and Overview

Ludger Duvernay (January 22 1799 - November 28 1852) was born in Verchères, Quebec.

He was a printer by profession and published a number of newspapers including the Gazette des Trois-Rivières, and also La Minerve, which supported the Parti patriote and Louis-Joseph Papineau before the rebellion. He was arrested by the authorities on four separate occasions.

In 1834 he helped found and lead the Association Saint-Jean-Baptiste (today, the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Society). He was briefly a member of the Legislative Assembly of Quebec in 1837.

He fled to Burlington, Vermont when the Patriotes Rebellion began, but returned to Montreal in 1842 and resumed publication of La Minerve until his death, supporting Louis-Hippolyte Lafontaine against Papineau.
