Storyline

The story of Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete focuses on a boy's dream to one day become a dragonmaster, the guardian of the goddess Althena, who commands the power of the four dragons. At the start of the game, it was 15 years ago since the last dragonmaster was seen. The former dragonmaster, Dyne, is presumed dead after his disappearance and the only person who knows what happened back then refuses to talk about it. A monument has been erected dedicated to Dyne in a small village called Burg, consisting of a small memorial stone and a sword wedged into the stone. At the start of the game, the boy, Alex, is daydreaming about having his own adventures and protecting the goddess as the dragonmaster with his friend Ramus and his girlfriend Luna. Unfortunately, excitement and adventure are hard to find in the small village of Burg, but an unexpected turn of events is about to open a world of adventure for Alex.

The quest Alex takes on after passing the trial of the white dragon takes him to nearly every corner of the world. From small port villages like Saith to large cities like Meribia. Alex will even get to visit the magic city of Vane, which floats around the goddess tower where the goddess resides and the Frontier, a desolate wasteland outside of the reach of the goddess. All in all, Alex must meet with all the dragon and undergo their trials to become the dragonmaster and safe the world from domination from a ruthless mage, Ghaleon.

Lunar mythology

The world of Lunar consists of single planet with a single known moon orbiting the planet. The game takes place on a piece of fertile land on the moon, called Lunar or the Silver Star. Outside of the reach of the goddess, Lunar is still the same wasteland it has always been, home of those who refuses to worship the goddess, the Vile Tribe. The main planet is the Blue Star, a normal planet with oceans and atmosphere where the humans used to live. However, 500 years prior to the game, humans fought themselves nearly to extinction and left their planet crippled and dead because of the constant war. The goddess Althena then took all her people away from the planet and settled on the planet's moon, called the Silver Star. Using her powers to create a large hospitable area for her people, she laid dormant, only to be occasionally reborn as a human should the world need her attention.

Note that a lot of this info is from Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete, the sequel to this game. Although this game itself does not give much background information, the sequel does and both games take place on the same world, thus have the same history.

Nobody is quite sure what Nall really is, but most people assume that Nall is just a white cat with wings. It's Ramus thirst for adventure, success and greed that drives Alex, Nall, Luna and himself on their first adventure to the white dragon cave. However, despite all the fancy talking, Ramus barely has the nerves for an adventuring life and would do smart to apply his keen mind and sharp business skills somewhere else.

Luna

Luna

  • Name: Luna
  • Occupation: Singer

Luna is the adopted child of Alex' parents and lives together with him and Nall. Shy, silent and soft-spoken, Luna has been gifted with a beautiful voice, strong enough to affect those who listen. Her songs are magical, drawing power from an unknown source as Luna has never studied magic nor is she a priestess who can cast magic in the name of the goddess. However, in a remote village like Burg, no one really cares much about these things and the quality of Luna's singing in itself by far outweighs the magics hidden in her songs. She is a pretty normal girl, apart from the fact the power of her own songs sometimes frighten her and she has a repeating nightmare that doesn't make sense to her...

Nash is a quite capable magic user, despite being an apprentice and unfortunately, he's all too much aware of this. Despite all his big talking and overinflated ego, he has a soft spot for the future leader of the Magic Guild, Mia, and deep inside he's terribly afraid of a great power which even he must recognize as superior.

Despite all this, he's a good bandit, protecting the people who want to cross the Nanza barrier for a charge instead of robbing them like before. Chivalrous enough to protect women and children for free, still enough of a bandit to charge men twice the money. used to be involved in a stormy relationship with a priestess of Althena.

She's got a strong will and is very dedicated to whatever cause she's currently fighting for, be it unmasking false heroes or trying to change her former bandit boyfriend into someone a bit more responsible.

Strong points

In general, the strong points of Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete are considered to be the well-developed characters, the solid and consistent storyline and a good dose of humor. Even though the storyline itself is pretty linear, it's thought of as well developed with a good plot and a good dose of humor that makes this game interesting to most fans of the genre. The battle system is regarded as effective, clean but slightly on the old compared to other modern RPGs. People should consider that this game is a remake of a 1996 game, which in turn was a remake on a 1992 game. Because of this, both the music and the graphics come over as a bit old according to most players, far below what one would expect when compared to other PlayStation CRPGs such as Final Fantasy VII.
