Lunchbox Lunchbox

Lunchbox - Definition and Overview

Lunch box and vacuum bottle owned by Harry S. Truman

A lunchbox, sometimes called a lunchpail, is a container for carrying food, usually for lunch during work or school. Many lunchboxes, especially those for children, feature bright colors and designs such as popular cartoons. The contents of a lunchbox often consist of sandwiches. Lunch box manufacturers never use the term "lunchbox" and often prefer "lunch kit".

The original "lunchpail" was an actual pail or bucket. Later, special buckets were manufactured specifically for food.
