M-80 - Definition and Overview |
M-80s are illegal fireworks that contain large amounts of flash powder. The "real" M-80s (munitions 80?) were developed by the US military to simulate gunfire and contain roughly 3 grams of flash powder. In 1966 congress passed a Child Protection Act which made it illegal to sell, possess, or use M-80s anywhere within the United States. Since then, many fireworks companies have produced "spin-offs" to replicate the sound of the M-80 such as the named, M-60, M-70, M-88, M-90, which contain far less amounts of pyrotechnic, 50 milligrams or less, which is the maximum ammount allowed by law.
"ΒΌ stick of dynamite"
M-80s are NOT quarter sticks of dynamite. A quarter stick of dynamite contains 35 grams of pyrotechnic, which is much more than the 3 grams of flash powder contained in an M-80.
