In the anime and manga Gundam universe, the MS-05 Zaku IA was the first successful mobile suit design to be developed by Zeonic Company in the Duchy's quest to develop a combat-capable mobile suit. First designed and built in UC 0075, the Zaku I wasn't put into mass-production until UC 0077, as the Zaku IB. Fully 800 Zaku I type models were produced, the first ones being used as training suit for the Duchy's battalions. The succsessfull use of these suits prompted the Zeon Navy to commission ships that could carry them into combat, primarily the Musai class. Rendered obselete by the beginning of the One Year War by the Zaku II, they were relegated for use in the rear lines as supply and construction suits. They still saw action, though, as colony gassers, and, toward the end of the war, as frontline combat suits during the Battle of A Baoa Qu.
A handfull of these suits were upgraded during the One-Year War for veteran and elite pilots who prefered the Zaku I over the Zaku II. The line was phased out after the One Year War.
