Machinist Machinist

Machinist - Definition and Overview

A machinist is a trade that specializes in making things out of metal. A machinist is to steel as a carpenter to wood. Except for welding a machinist deals with all facets of shaping, cutting and forming steel. Tools that a machinist uses include: bridgeports, cnc boring mills, lathes and the old fashioned grinding wheel.

A machinist is usually called upon when someone needs a low number of steel parts made for anything. This could include engine parts, production line parts or generally anything made of steel. When large numbers of parts are required, some sort of computer controlled machine is usually used to make the parts. This is more cost effective and is commonly referred to as production work in the trade.
