Malcolm Bruce - Definition and Overview

Malcolm Gray Bruce (born November 17, 1944) is politician in the United Kingdom, and is Liberal Democrat member of Parliament for Gordon.

Born in Birkenhead, he was educated at Wrekin College in Shropshire prior to attending St Andrews University. He worked in the publishing industry and as a journalist prior to his political career.

He was elected to the seat in the 1983 election, then as a Liberal. He used to be a spokesman for the party, and developed the idea of a 'penny on income tax'.

Having previously led his political party, he stood as a candidate to re-assume its leadership in 1999 on the resignation of Paddy Ashdown, coming third in the vote. As of 2004, he is his party's spokesman for trade and industry.

Politically moderate, he is an outspoken opponent of coalition with the Labour Party. He is married with three children.
