The game Manhunter is a classic style adventure game. The protagonist is a private investigator in the employ of a floating eyeball, an alien whose race took over the earth in 2002 (the game is set in 2004, which at the time of its release was 16 years into the future). As the plot develops he tracks down a mole that has infiltrated the resistance and is killing its members, but the mole escapes in the end leaving the plot open for the sequel.
Manhunter was published by Sierra On-Line in 1988 and was designed and programmed by Barry Murry, Dave Murry, and Dee Dee Murry (of Evryware)
There are two games in the Manhunter series:
- , set in New York 2 years after the alien invasion,
- , set just after the end of the first game, in San Francisco.
Manhunter was developed using Sierra's Adventure Game Interpreter (AGI). It was considered an unique AGI game at that time, because unlike previous games, it did not use a text parser, it featured first-person perspective (instead of third-person) and had a rudimentary point-and-click interface (though using the keyboard instead of a mouse).
