Manningtree Manningtree

Manningtree - Definition and Overview

Manningtree is a town in Essex, England, which has merged with the port of Mistley, on the River Stour. It sometimes claims to be England's smallest town, although it is far larger than Fordwich.

The town grew around the wool trade from the fifteenth century. It is known for its breweries, its buildings by Robert Adam (as part of an unrealised plan to turn it into a spa town), and as the centre of Matthew Hopkins, the witchfinder general's, activities.
