In 1532, King Henry VIII of England gave Anne Boleyn the title Marchioness of Pembroke.
His great-uncle Jasper Tudor had been Earl of Pembroke. This was the year before Anne married Henry to become his second Queen Consort and it was an indication of his high regard for her.
It was the first time a woman had ever been created a member of the peerage in her own right.
The title was forfeited to the Crown in 1536 and has never been used since for either a Marquess or a Marchioness.
