Marcus Valerius Messalla Messallinus - Definition

Marcus Valerius Messalla Messallinus was the son of the famous orator Marcus Valerius Messalla Corvinus I. He was a senator and consul in 3 BC and 3 AD.

Messallinus suggested to Tiberius an oath of allegiance to him should be done yearly. Tiberius rejected his proposal of two golden statues to be placed in two temples in celebration of Rome's foreign victories and also in memory of Germanicus. He was like his father in character.

He became the second husband of Augustus' niece Claudia Marcella Minor. Their son Marcus Valerius Messalla Barbatus would became father of the Empress Valeria Messalina.
