Mari is an ancient city in Syria situated at the modern locality of Tell Hariri. It flourished from 2900 BC until 1759 BC, when it was sacked by Hammurabi.
In archeological excavations starting in 1993, over 25,000 clay tables in Akkadian language were discovered.
Goddess Innanna (later called Isthar) was worshipped in Mari, there are temples built for her.
She is the origin of later greek, roman (and other) goddesses.
