Maria Balkenhol - Definition

Maria Balkenhol was an SS Aufseherin at the Buchenwald concentration camp from 1944 until April 1945.

Maria Marta Balkenhol was born in Muehlheim-Ruhr, Germany on March 1, 1918. In 1944 Maria was accepted into the SS, which was extremely unusual. Out of 3,500 women guards who served in the Nazi camp system, only sixteen were actual SS members. The rest of the female guards belonged to the SS Helferinnen (SS Auxiliary), or the SS Gefolge. After Maria was accepted into the SS ranks the Nazis sent her to the Buchenwald concentration camp in central Germany to undergo training. Maria served her duty until Buchenwald was evacuated in early April 1945. She has not been tried for war crimes, and her fate remains unknown.
