Mark Brandon Read - Definition and Overview

Mark Brandon "Chopper" Read is one of Australia's most notorious underworld heavies and now best-selling author of twelve books and a painter. Famous for "standing over" drug dealers and other Melbourne criminals, he was convicted of wounding a man in 1987. Read authored his first book Chopper: From the Inside in 1991 from inside Pentridge prison, in Coburg, Victoria containing tales and anecdotes of his criminal and prison exploits. He married Mary-Ann Hodge, an Australian tax office employee, while serving time at Risdon Prison in Tasmania in 1995, only to divorce in 2001.

Chopper is as witty and charismatic, as he is sadistic and frightening, and employs a Robin Hood defence in explaining his previous criminal actions. He admits to 19 killings and 11 attempted murders.
