Mark Crispin (born 1956) is a staff member at the University of Washington, noted as the inventor of IMAP. He is the author or co-author of numerous RFCs; and is the principal author of UW-IMAP, one of the reference implementations of the IMAP4rev1 protocol described in RFC 3501.
He is also the author of the infamous RFC 748, the only document specifically marked in the RFC index with note date of issue.
Prior to joining the UW staff in 1988, he was a staff member at Stanford University for 11 years. At Stanford, he was the principal developer of the TOPS-20 mailsystem, and still runs a TOPS-20 system at his residence.
