Mark Malloch Brown - Definition and Overview

Mark Malloch Brown (born 1953), a British official, is chief of staff to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, appointed 3 January 2005. He is a former journalist, economist and communications consultant.

As the administrator of the UN Development Programme (UNDP) since 1999, Malloch Brown ranked No 3 in the UN system. He is also the Chair of the United Nations Development Group. He was a vice-president and external affairs spokesman for the World Bank from 1994 until 1999, and had worked earlier for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

He was a political editor at The Economist between 1977 and 1979, then founded and served as editor for the Economist Development Report, followed by working as the lead international partner in the Sawyer-Miller Group from 1996 through 1994.

He was received a First Class Honours Degree in History from Magdalene College, Cambridge and a Master's Degree in Political Science from the University of Michigan.
