Mark Rosewater is a prolific Magic: The Gathering card designer. With the title of Head Magic Designer, he oversees the production of new sets. He is often referred to as "MaRo," originally a Wizards office name for him. In the Mirage expansion of the card game, a creature named Maro was included, named for him.
Sets he helped design include Tempest, Unglued, Urza's Destiny, Odyssey, and Mirrodin.
Amongst more experienced Magic players Rosewater is often the target of much criticism and discontent. He is often blamed for "dumbing down" the game and, in some opponents' minds, is synonymous with the supposed degeneration of the game in newer sets. In his weekly column, however, he has given opinions which seem directly contradictory to these. Regardless of his actual effect on the game, it is likely that only Wizards employees who know him personally will ever really be sure what role he has played in the constantly changing game that is Magic.
Rosewater has a background in comedy writing, including writing for the sitcom Roseanne, and writes a weekly column on the official Magic: The Gathering website called Making Magic (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=mtgcom/columnarchive&column=MakingMagic).
