Markland Markland

Markland - Definition and Overview

Markland is the name given to an area of unknown location, named by Leif Ericson when visiting North America. Markland, for "treeland," is known to be north of Vinland and south of Helluland. It is generally believed to be in Labrador; Newfoundland may have either been Vinland or part of Markland (see Vinland). Ericsson's crew cut down trees and took them to Greenland, because Greenland has very few trees. Although never settled by the Norse, there were probably several later expeditions from Greenland to gather timber.
