 Markus Buchart - Definition

Markus Buchart is a Manitoba politician. He has been the leader of the Green Party of Manitoba since its formation in 1998.

Buchart was trained as an economist. Between 1986 and 1992, he advised both Progressive Conservative and New Democratic governments in Manitoba on tax policy, federal-provincial relations and environmental issues. He left the civil service in 1992 to protest the government's environmental policies.

Buchart received a law degree from the University of Manitoba in 1995, and has operated an independent law practice in Winnipeg since that time. His focus has been on corporate and environmental law, and his clients have included labour unions and non-profit corporations. Buchart has also been involved in a variety of environmental, peace and social justice groups, and wrote for the environmental quarterly Links Magazine between 1989 and 1998.

Buchart campaigned against Premier Gary Filmon in the riding of Tuxedo in the 1999 provincial election, receiving 126 votes. In 2003, he campaigned in the Winnipeg riding of Wolseley and received an impressive 1193 votes (19.2%), placing second against New Democrat Rob Altemeyer. No other GPM candidate received more than 7% of their riding vote in that election.

Buchart spoke out against the use of nocturnal insectide sweeps in Wolseley in 2002, describing them as "indiscriminate and useless".

In 2004, he supported Jim Harris's successful bid for re-election as leader of the Green Party of Canada.
