 The Matanuska River, in south central Alaska The Matanuska River is a river, approximately 75 mi (120 km) long, in southern Alaska in the United States. It drains a broad valley known as the Matanuska Valley northeast of Anchorage south of the Alaska Range.
It issues from the Matanuska Glacier in the northern Chugach Moutnains, approximately 100 mi (160 km) ENE of Anchorage. It flows generally WSW through the Matanuska Valley between the Chugach (S) and Talkeetna mountains (N). It flows past Palmer and enters the Knik Arm of Cook Inlet from the northeast approximately 25 mi (40 km) northeast of Anchorage.
The Matanuska Valley is one of the most settled regions of Alaska and one of the few areas in the state to support agriculture. The river is a popular destination for whitewater rafting.
