Matheran is an charming hill-station in the Western Ghats near Mumbai. It is situated at an altitude of 800 mtrs amongst dense greenery. A train can be taken from Mumbai to Neral (90 km) or from Pune to Neral (120 km). There is a small narrow-gauge train from Neral to Matheran. This try-train ride of 21 km is a joyous experience. Matheran's clean environs is credited to its policy of not permitting any vehicles. Dasturi is the last point for vehicles and there are horses or hand-pulled rickshaws to go further. However, most tourists prefer to walk the 11-km hike to the top, which passes through shady trees. October to may is the best time to visit Matheran, for its sweetly chilling cold. The Charlotte Lake is the central lake and there are many other sites to surprise visitors. The Panther's laves and the Paymaster Park are a must-see for everyone. There are very few cliff points but they provide a spectacular view. From the Hart's point, one can even see the lights of Mumbai on a clear night. The old bazaars of Matheran are also good for shopping. Horses are available for travelling in Matheran. There are also Tourism resorts for staying.
