 Mathias Lock - Definition 

Mathias Lock (working ca 1731 - ca 1768) was a London carver and gilder who was an accomplished designer and ornamentalist. Lock, in partnership with Henry Copland was one of the craftsmen who introduced the Rococo Furniture Style to England in the late 1730s. He produced several books and short suites of fengraved urniture designs that included carved furniture such side tables, clock cases, candlestands, wall sconces and mirror frames, as well as chimneypieces between 1746 and 1769. However his contribution to one of the most famous design books of that era, Thomas Chippendale's Director is not acknowledged and seldom recognized. A collection of his original drawings is preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. a few more are at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
