McDonough is a city located in Henry County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 8,493. Census Estimates of 2003 indicate a population of 11,721. The city is the county seat of Henry County6.

McDonough is located at 33°26'42" North, 84°8'57" West (33.445037, -84.149043)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 20.2 km² (7.8 mi²). 20.1 km² (7.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.51% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 8,493 people, 3,069 households, and 2,102 families residing in the city. The population density is 422.6/km² (1,093.8/mi²). There are 3,234 housing units at an average density of 160.9/km² (416.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 61.38% White, 34.30% African American, 0.16% Native American, 1.39% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.78% from other races, and 0.99% from two or more races. 3.47% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,069 households out of which 35.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.2% are married couples living together, 18.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.5% are non-families. 25.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.14.

In the city the population is spread out with 26.4% under the age of 18, 10.6% from 18 to 24, 34.1% from 25 to 44, 16.8% from 45 to 64, and 12.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 90.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $41,482, and the median income for a family is $46,818. Males have a median income of $34,669 versus $28,318 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,029. 12.8% of the population and 9.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.3% of those under the age of 18 and 18.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

According to a December 11, 2004 story carried by the Associated Press, a student at Lake Dow Christian Academy brought a pipe bomb to school to sell to classmates for $35 to raise money for Christmas presents. School principal Rev. James West is quoted as saying, "he didn't mean any harm...boys are all the time doing stupid things." Lake Dow Christian Academy is one of many private fundamentalist protestant Christian schools in the Bible Belt which teach "Christian family values."
