McLean County is a county located in the state of North Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 9,311. Its county seat is Washburn6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 6,030 km² (2,328 mi²). 5,465 km² (2,110 mi²) of it is land and 565 km² (218 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 9.37% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 9,311 people, 3,815 households, and 2,712 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km² (4/mi²). There are 5,264 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 92.52% White, 0.02% Black or African American, 5.95% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 1.18% from two or more races. 0.87% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,815 households out of which 29.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.30% are married couples living together, 5.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.90% are non-families. 26.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.80% under the age of 18, 5.10% from 18 to 24, 22.70% from 25 to 44, 27.90% from 45 to 64, and 20.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 98.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.60 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $32,337, and the median income for a family is $39,604. Males have a median income of $32,376 versus $18,224 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,220. 13.50% of the population and 10.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.30% of those under the age of 18 and 12.90% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
