Meera Meera

Meera - Definition and Overview

Meera (1498 - 1547) was a Rajput princess who lived in the north Indian state of Rajasthan. Born in Mewar, she was married to a Rajput Prince of Chittor. She was a devout follower of Lord Krishna. Although she was married, she always believed that she was the property of Krishna. She gradually renounced everything, including her life. As she declined to forgo Krishna, the prince threatened finally to poison her food but she readily accepted and gave up her life. Meera is hence regarded as a first class devotee.

Meera composed numerous bhajans, which are popular even to this day. She travelled the lands singing these songs.

Meera is widely regarded as a saint in the tradition of the Bhakti Movement. The Bhakti Movement was a cult in 16th century India that showed the path to salvation by devotion. Other saints belonging to this cult were Tukaram, Kabir, Guru Nanak, Ramananda.
