Mekong Delta - Definition and Overview

The Mekong Delta is the region in Southeast Vietnam where the Mekong River approaches and empties into the sea through a network of tributaries. The Mekong delta region encompasses a large portion of southeastern Vietnam of c.75,000 sq mi/194,250 sq km.

During the Vietnam War, the Delta region saw fighting between Viet Cong guerillas and units of the United States Navy operating in small river boats.

The area is home to large numbers of rice cultivation fields and the surrounding farmlands are extremely fertile.
