Melissa Hart is the first woman to represent Pennsylvania in either house of the United States Congress.
Melissa A. Hart (born April 4, 1962) is an American politician who currently serves in the United States House of Representatives for the Fourth Congressional District of the state of Pennsylvania. A Republican, Hart became the first woman in history to represent Pennsylvania at the federal level. Previous to her Congressional tenure, Hart served in the Pennsylvania Senate.
Hart was born in North Hills, Pennsylvania and graduated from North Allegheny High School, Washington and Jefferson College, and the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. Upon leaving school, she entered into legal practice as an attorney for a major Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania law firm.
Hart was raised into national prominence when she was appointed co-chair of the Platform Committee for the 2004 Republican National Convention. Under the guiding hand of United States Senator Bill Frist, Hart helped to craft the Republican political agenda to be implemented for the period between 2004 and 2008.
