 Mendenhall Glacier and Lake The Mendenhall Glacier is located about 12 miles from downtown Juneau, Alaska in the Mendenhall Valley. Originally named Auke Glacier by John Muir, it was renamed in honor of Thomas Corwin Mendenhall, the superintendent of the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (1889-1894) in 1892. It runs from the Juneau Icefield to Mendenhall Lake. It has been retreating for at least the last three hundred years and was about 2.5 miles longer in 1700. The Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center is administered by the USDA Forest Service as part of the Tongass National Forest.
