Meredith Gardner was born in the U.S. state of Texas in 1912 and died on August 20, 2002. Originally a linguist and professor of German at the University of Akron, he was recruited by the U.S. Army's Signals Intelligence Service and worked on the highly-secret VENONA project as codebreaker.
