The concept of meridians arises from techniques of Chinese medicine like acupuncture and acupressure. The theory of both tell that the body's vital energy (氣 ('qi') in Mandarin Chinese) circulates through the body along specific channels, called meridians. The different meridians are interconnected.
The theory behind acupuncture, acupressure and related techniques claims that disruptions of the body's energy flow causes emotional and physical illnesses. To release those disruptions, specific acupoints or tsubo on the meridians are stimulated via needles, pressure or other means.
