The Mersey Railway Tunnel, between Liverpool and Birkenhead, was opened in 1886 and was the first tunnel to be built below the River Mersey. The tunnel is still in use today by Merseyrail.
By 1890 it was carrying 10 million passengers a year and in 1891 the tunnel was extended to Liverpool Central station from the orginal terminus at James Street station. In 1903, it was electrified, becoming the first railway in the world to change over completely from steam to electric power. The total length of the tunnel is 5029m.
