Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake is a stealth-based game directed by Hideo Kojima and developed and published by Konami . It is the second game in the Metal Gear series and was released only in Japan for the MSX on July 20, 1990.

In the game, Solid Snake must infiltrate Zanzibar Land (not to be confused with the real-life Zanzibar that is part of Tanzania), a heavily defended territory described to be located between The Soviet Union, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and China.

Snake's mission is to rescue a scientist who has created bacteria that secrete artificial petroleum, and to seek out and destroy Metal Gear.

American gamers did not have the opportunity to play Metal Gear 2 until much later. The game's Japanese-only release on the MSX, a computer system that was unavailble in America, was a steep barrier to overcome. The problem was obvious enough that Metal Gear Solid included plenty of information on the second Metal Gear game for fans that missed out on the plot.

Eventually, fans of the series translated the game into English and provided a disk image for use with MSX emulators.

The game was recently ported for download on mobile phones in Japan. Released on October 1, 2004, this version features redone character designs by Yoji Shinkawa and new game modes.
