Metroad 5 - Definition and Overview

Metroad 5 (M5) is a main arterial route linking Sydney's city centre to its southwest suburbs and beyond. It links Hume Highway to Sydney CBD via Metroad 1.

History

M5 replaces the Hume Highway (Liverpool Rd) from Liverpool to the city. Originally in the 1980's Hume Highway(National Highway 31) ended at Cross Roads, just before Liverpool. This stretch of freeway (Campbelltown to Cross Roads) was previously known as South Western Freeway designated F5. M5 extends and supersedes F5.

From then on, to proceed to the city, the alternatives are either Liverpool Rd (then National Route 31) or Newbridge Rd (State Route 54) via Bankstown. Both routes have many traffic lights and are very congested.

Initial stretch was built in middle 1980s linking Heathcote Rd at Moorebank and Hume Highway. Later this stretch linked to Cross Roads interchange. A brand new freeway was constructed to link Moorebank and Sydney International Airport. It was finally completed in the early 1990s.

Track

It starts from Campbelltown and ends at General Holmes Drive (Metroad 1) at Sydney's International Airport. Its complete lenght is fully freeway standard.

It is Hume Highway until Cross Roads and thereafter South Western Motorway until the Airport. The South Western Motorway is tolled from Moorebank to Beverly Hills. It is more or less parrallel with State Route 54 (Newbridge Rd, Milperra Rd and Canterbury Rd) until Kingsgrove. From Kingsgrove, the M5 passes through long tunnel finally emerging and ends at General Holmes Drive (Metroad 1).
