Santiago Metropolitan Region is a landlocked region located in central Chile. It is the country's most populated region. It contains the nation's capital, Santiago. Most commerce and administrative centers are located in this region, including Chile's main international airport Arturo Merino Benítez. The region was created in 1974, during Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship.
