Meurthe Meurthe

Meurthe - Definition

Meurthe is a former département of France. Its chief-town was Nancy. It takes its name from the Meurthe River.

History

The département was created on March 4, 1790, during the French Revolution, out of a part of the former province of Lorraine.

It was divided into 5 arrondissements in 1800. Its sous-préfectures were Château-Salins, Lunéville, Sarrebourg and Toul. The département had 714 communes and a population of 428,387 in 1866.

After the French defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871, the north-eastern part of Meurthe département became part of Prussia. The French part of the département joined the French part of Moselle to form Meurthe-et-Moselle département.
