Mexican Hat is a census-designated place located in San Juan County, Utah, USA. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 88, a significant decrease from the 1990 figure of 259.

The name "Mexican Hat" comes from a curiously shaped rock outcropping on the northeast edge of town.

Mexican Hat is located at 37°9'54" North, 109°51'56" West (37.165131, -109.865446)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 22.4 km² (8.6 mi²). 21.2 km² (8.2 mi²) of it is land and 1.2 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.32% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 88 people, 29 households, and 22 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 4.1/km² (10.7/mi²). There are 32 housing units at an average density of 1.5/km² (3.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 37.50% White, 0.00% African American, 57.95% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 4.55% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 6.82% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 29 households out of which 48.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.7% are married couples living together, 27.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.7% are non-families. 20.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.03 and the average family size is 3.43.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 31.8% under the age of 18, 19.3% from 18 to 24, 19.3% from 25 to 44, 25.0% from 45 to 64, and 4.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 24 years. For every 100 females there are 66.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 76.5 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $57,656, and the median income for a family is $58,750. Males have a median income of $41,250 versus $18,750 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $14,973. 6.5% of the population and 0.0% of families are below the poverty line.
