In common usage, a Mexican standoff is a situation where two opponents already have ranged weapons aimed directly at each other, so that neither can attack the other without being attacked themselves. Traditionally, this involves both men each pointing a gun at the other's head, so one can't shoot without being shot. Mexican standoffs are common in action movies.
